As we inch closer to the iPhone 16 launch, one of the most anticipated features among tech enthusiasts and professionals alike is the camera system. Apple has a long-standing reputation for pushing the boundaries of mobile photography, and the iPhone 16 is set to be no exception. In fact, with the iPhone 16, Apple could potentially solidify its lead in mobile photography once again—something that became a hot topic when we compared it to other flagship devices like the Samsung S25 Ultra in our recent article. As a professional photographer, here’s what I’m most excited about in Apple’s latest release.

Major Sensor Improvements: Bigger and Better

One of the most exciting rumors about the iPhone 16 is the potential for larger image sensors across all models. We’ve already seen improvements with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but the iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumored to take it a step further. Larger sensors mean more light is captured, which directly translates to improved low-light performance and more detailed images in challenging lighting conditions.

When we recently discussed how the Samsung S25 Ultra might handle low-light photography, the consensus was that it could excel. However, Apple’s decision to invest in bigger sensors for the iPhone 16 could mean more balanced photos, with less noise and superior color accuracy—even in the darkest of environments.

Computational Photography: More Powerful than Ever

Apple’s edge in mobile photography often lies in its computational photography. The combination of powerful hardware and sophisticated software delivers stunning photos. With the A18 Bionic chip (which we've talked about previously in relation to performance improvements), the iPhone 16’s camera will have even more processing power to deliver better HDR, portrait shots, and Night mode photos.

I’m particularly excited about potential enhancements to Smart HDR, which Apple has perfected over the years. Apple’s software has an uncanny ability to balance exposure in high-contrast scenes, allowing you to shoot directly into bright lights or shadows without losing crucial details. In comparison, while the Samsung S25 Ultra will have its strengths in zoom, Apple’s Smart HDR could maintain its edge for those who prioritize overall image quality in complex lighting.

Periscope Zoom Lens: The Long-Awaited Feature

One of the most talked-about upgrades for the iPhone 16 Pro Max is the introduction of a periscope zoom lens. In our comparisons with the Samsung S25 Ultra, we highlighted Samsung’s impressive zoom capabilities, with up to 10x optical zoom. If the iPhone 16 delivers on its rumored 5x or even 6x optical zoom, it will bring Apple closer to competing in that area.

As a photographer, having access to a high-quality optical zoom in a smartphone would be a game-changer. Currently, even though iPhones take great wide and ultra-wide shots, zooming has always been a weak point compared to other brands. But with the periscope lens, Apple could offer photographers and everyday users the flexibility to shoot high-quality photos even from a distance.

ProRAW and ProRes: Bigger and Better Files

For professionals, the introduction of ProRAW and ProRes on the iPhone has been transformative. It allows for more control in post-processing, and Apple is expected to make further advancements in the iPhone 16.

Shooting in ProRAW gives photographers the flexibility to adjust exposure, white balance, and color in post-processing while maintaining the level of detail that’s crucial for professional work. And with ProRes video, content creators can produce cinema-grade videos right from their iPhones. The iPhone 16’s A18 chip, which we've mentioned in our previous articles on performance, should make handling these large file formats even smoother, making this phone a legitimate tool for professional videographers and photographers alike.

Improved Night Mode and Photonic Engine

Another expected area of improvement is the iPhone 16’s Night mode. While Apple’s current Night mode is already impressive, rumors suggest that the iPhone 16 will bring even better noise reduction and faster processing speeds, thanks to a more advanced Photonic Engine. This will be particularly beneficial for night photography, where sharpness and detail are often compromised due to low light.

In our earlier look at the iPhone 16 versus the Samsung S25 Ultra, we acknowledged Samsung’s capability in this space. However, Apple’s combination of hardware and software improvements may help it regain the crown for the best low-light photography on a smartphone.

Final Thoughts

Apple’s iPhone 16 is shaping up to be a game-changer for mobile photographers. With expected advancements in sensor size, computational photography, and the introduction of a periscope zoom lens, this iPhone is likely to be a photographer’s dream. Whether you’re capturing landscapes, portraits, or nighttime cityscapes, the iPhone 16 could deliver the versatility and quality professionals have been asking for.

While the Samsung S25 Ultra has a lot going for it in terms of zoom and display, Apple’s holistic approach to mobile photography may once again set it apart. As the official reveal draws closer, we can’t wait to see how these rumored features translate into real-world performance.
